How to take care of Fern Dicksonia antarctica
Plant all ferns in a compost enriched soil, the require gritty free draining topsoil. Ferns for the border like to be planted in a semi shady situation and must be given some space to unfold their lovely foliage. Dicksonia Ferns need a spacious place in humus rich soil, dig bark, leaf mould or well rotted manure through the soil. They grow best in a shady to half shady position. If planted in planters (large min. 35 cm across) make sure the drainage is good. Important the barky stem of the Dicksonia should not to dry up. Water over the top of the plant once a week with a can of rainwater. Fern's need some protection during harsh winters either by wrapping the trunk in insulating matter, a well tied on layer of straw matting and/or bubble wrap is recommended, and protect the crown by stuffing it with straw.
