How to take care of Aronia prunifolia Viking
Grow in any moist but well-drained soil (except shallow soil over chalk) in sun or partial shade. Dig the planting hole 4 times the width of the root ball and to a depth equal to the size of the root ball so it can be planted at the same depth in which it was growing. Fill the hole with a mixture of compost and soil. Water well after planting and for next few weeks. Cut back suckers if not wanted. Also, thinning older canes once every few years will keep the plants more productive. Since plants bloom on new growth, shaping or pruning can be done at any time. Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer, propagate by suckers when plants are dormant and pot up. Harvest in autumn in late August or early September or only harvest when fully ripe as they taste much better. Best eaten fresh but can be stored in a cool place (like a refrigerator) for up to two weeks. Generally pest and disease free.
