Rootstock

Rootstocks (such as shrubs, hedges, and trees) grown in the ground are dug up during the dormant period and sold without pots or root balls.
The roots are therefore exposed, which has many advantages—provided they are treated properly.

What is Bare Root?

Bare root plants are shrubs, hedges and trees grown in open ground and lifted during dormancy without soil or pot. They are delivered with bare roots – a traditional and eco-friendly way of cultivation.

Advantages:

  • Lower price than potted or balled plants

  • Eco-friendly – no plastic, lighter transport

  • Easy to handle and plant

  • Quick root development after planting

  • Wide range available in autumn and early spring

Things to note:

  • Available only during the planting season (October–April)

  • Roots must never dry out

  • Plant immediately after delivery or heel in temporarily

  • Plants will leaf out in spring

Planting instructions

Preparation:
Plan the planting in advance. For larger quantities, dig trenches or holes before the plants arrive. Ensure loose, well-drained soil.

Hydrate roots:
Soak roots for 1–2 hours on arrival, or wrap them in moist paper or burlap. Never allow roots to dry out.

Planting:

  1. Dig a wide hole

  2. Loosen soil and mix in compost

  3. Place plant upright with root collar just below surface

  4. Spread roots, refill soil, firm gently

  5. Water generously

Aftercare:

  • Keep soil moist

  • Apply mulch to retain moisture

  • Stake young trees if needed

  • Use a line for straight hedges
