We associate the banana tree mainly with the tropics, but there are banana plant species (Musa Basjoo) that are reasonably hardy and can, in principle, simply be planted in our garden. However, in winter you have to cover the base of the trunk of this tree with a thick layer of old leaves or the like. You remove the old leaves from the banana tree in the autumn and the tree will sprout surprisingly quickly in the spring.
The smaller varieties of banana plants are sold as houseplants, they grow quickly with imposing leaves but do not grow as large as the outdoor banana trees. You can put them outside on the terrace in the summer, but bring them back inside for the winter.
Our banana trees only give decorative fruit, the bananas are not edible, but you still feel like you are in the tropics with these banana trees.
