The foliage turns yellowish after frost, but quickly fades to straw-beige by winter and its flower plumes persist well into winter providing a good seasonal interest. The flowers can also be used as cut or dried flowers.
'Gracillimus' is an old and very popular cultivar and blooms later than most. Ideal for growing as a specimen on a lawn, at the back of the border or as a screen.

How to take care of Miscanthus sinensis Gracillimus
Miscanthus can remain in the ground for at least fifteen to twenty years. First year growth is insufficient. New shoots emerge around March each year, growing rapidly in June-July, producing bamboo-like canes. It dies back naturally in the autumn/winter; the leaves fall off, providing nutrients for the soil. This growth pattern is repeated every year. However, their spread is slow and there is little risk of uncontrolled invasion of hedges or fields. Suitable for any well drained soil, plant in a sunny or partially shaded position. Enrich the planting site with organic matter prior to planting. Plant in a hole deep enough so that the root ball will be a little deeper than the plant was growing in its container. Mulch grasses with organic material in the autumn to protect roots and shoots from freezing. Grasses which die back completely in winter can be rejuvenated by cutting the entire plant back to about 10cm in early spring.
