How to take care of Standard Calliandra
Carefully remove the Calliandra on stem from the pot and gently untangle the root ball so that the roots can grow outward and not remain in the shape of the nursery pot. This allows the plant to better absorb water during periods of drought. If you soak the root ball in water for 10-12 hours before planting, it provides the plant with a head start. When planting the Calliandra in open ground, dig a hole deep enough for the entire root ball to remain just below the soil surface. Mix the soil in the planting hole with some potting soil to retain water well while allowing excess water to drain easily. If planting the Calliandra on stem in a pot, make sure there are holes in the bottom of the pot for proper drainage. Protect the pot with the root ball from severe frost by either burying it in the ground and covering the base of the plant with a layer of compost or wrapping the pot in bubble wrap or straw and placing it in a sheltered location. Alternatively, you could bring it indoors to an unheated room, ensuring the plant doesn't dry out during winter. In early spring, provide some organic fertilizer, and repeat in mid-summer.
