How to take care of Standard Cotinus Royal Purple
This slow growing deciduous tree prefers a full sun position on your patio or decking. It can tolerate the following soil types: clay; sand; loam; acidic; alkaline; and well-drained. It blooms in summer. Keep the soil moderately fertile and moist. To promote the growth of larger leaves, cut the stems back to within two or three buds in early spring. Can be susceptible to verticillium wilt, which is caused by water logging the soil and spreading up through the roots but is generally pest free. You will need to trim it into the ball shape as it grows. If you are growing this plant in a pot make sure that the pot is well protected from harsh winter frosts, you can do this by either burying the entire pot in the soil and mulching around the top with a few inches of bark or leaves, or by wrapping the pot in a sack filled with straw and placing it in a sheltered spot or you could move the pot indoors to an unheated room, it does not need much water in winter however do not allow it to dry out completely.
