Prepare planting site with 50% potting compost and 50% top soil, plant Acer palmatum Phoenixso that the root ball is just below the surface and water well for the next few weeks. Apply a top dressing of organic fertiliser during early spring but not at the time of planting wait for about 6 weeks before applying fertiliser for the first time. Give the young trees support by means of a cane. Never let the roots dry out. Pruning is not necessary but you can cut out dead wood in spring.
