How to take care of Swede Champion
Swedes will grow in most well drained soil types but they prefer a medium soil which contains lots of nutrients. They do not do well in very acid soil, if your soil is acid then apply lime during soil preparation. For best results add some well-rotted manure or compost to the soil a few months prior to planting. The seeds should be sown directly where the plants are to mature as they cannot be transplanted. Sow seeds very thinly in 1.2 to 2.5 cm deep in drills about 50cm apart. Thin the seedlings as they grow allow 25cm of space between plants. Discard thinnings as they will not transplant. Swedes do not develop flavour until cool autumn days arrive, harvest after the first heavy frosts for maximum flavour. This variety stores well. Swede can also be used as a fodder plant.
